\nDescription<\/strong>:
\nThe main objective of the project is to develop specific bituminous mixes with an improved response to extreme temperatures and situations, such as the formation of ice on the road or the presence of a fire in a “closed” place like a tunnel. The aim is to take an important technological leap forward compared to the current situation described above by seeking alternative ways of dealing with extreme temperature conditions (ice and fire).
\nSpecifically, the PAVIREX project has developed an intelligent predictive road heating system using pipes embedded in the bituminous mix through which hot water from geothermal sources is passed. Its aim is to anticipate the formation of ice on the pavement, which contributes to reducing the environmental impact by reducing the use of de-icing agents and improving road safety.
\nThe predictive device is based on the placement of sensors and data acquisition elements, which, based on the atmospheric conditions and the temperature and humidity of the existing pavement, provides the probability of ice formation in the short term and starts the pavement heating system.
\nGiven that the conditions necessary for ice to form on a given stretch of road are variable, a control system is needed to determine when the pavement needs to be heated in order to minimise the energy consumption of the pipe system and thus reduce maintenance costs. In addition to this sensorised and energy efficient piping system, the use of bituminous mixes that are more resistant to low temperature conditions to minimise the effect of icing and the design of a feasible laying methodology are also required.<\/p>\n

This project has been funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO), with file number IPT-2011-1380-370000, as well as by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).<\/p>\n
